April 2011 - Sponsored walk for Sri Lanka

SFWIN invites you to join us on a sponsored walk to raise funds for the flood victims in Sri Lanka. We recently had a message from the Bishop of Anuradhapura who has been responding to the immediate needs of those affected by the floods in the North Central Province of the island. Now we need to support the consequences and longer-term effects of the devastation that has come as a result of the floods. Please see the Sri Lanka project page for further information.

THE APPEAL - Update Sept 2010

SFWIN recently received a letter of thanks from the Church and community we support in Ghana.  A sponsored walk organised by the SFWIN team in June 2009 raised money to send to the children in the St Martin de Porres School in Bolgatanga, in northern Ghana. The school has bought 35 benches with desks for the children who were previously sitting on the floor for their classes. The children were very excited to have the furniture in their classes.

However, the school is still in need of slates for the children to write on, reading and study materials and the funding for toilets at the school.

Fr Vincent met with the parents of the school and discussed the risks of disease without having access to a toilet. Presently, the children go to the bush to free themselves, and risk scorpion and snake bites, so the parents resolved to dig a pit toilet for the school. Each section of the village was tasked to dig 2ft at a place just close to the school wall. All parents responded well. Presently the toilet pit is ready – 10 metres deep. To use it, it needs to be decked and have a shelter built on top to cover it up, all involving expenses.

Fr. Vincent explained to us ‘The parents have done their best, using their hands and manual energy to dig so deep. However, given the poverty they have, they cannot really raise the money we need to complete building the toilet. We need to buy some cement, iron rods and sand, stones and zinc sheets.’

In order to raise more funds for the sanitation project and to supply materials for the St Martin de Porres School, SFWIN is holding a fundraising dinner. Whilst working to alleviate some of the hardships of poverty in Ghana, we also want to celebrate the beauty of Ghanaian culture. Fittingly, during black history month, we want to invite the community to a Ghanaian evening.  Please contact us for more information.
